Game Modes Overview

Your game mode is selected during character creation and cannot be changed afterward. Each mode fundamentally changes difficulty and the stakes of failure. Echoes of Aincrad is single-player only — there is no co-op or multiplayer in any mode (see the Multiplayer Status guide).

Note on numbers: Echoes of Aincrad does not publish official mode statistics. The damage multipliers, timers, and drop-rate adjustments below are community-reported and may change with patches.

Story Mode

Reported adjustments: enemies deal less damage and SP costs are reduced. Parry windows are more forgiving, and the downed-state revival window is longer.

Restrictions (reported): Achievements disabled, lower boss drop rates, no Death Game Mode exclusive content, certain titles unavailable.

Normal Mode

The default experience with full content, standard enemy scaling, the complete achievement system, and a standard revival window. Recommended starting mode for most players.

Hard Mode

Reported adjustments: enemies deal more damage, SP costs increase, and parry windows tighten. Enemies are more aggressive with larger HP pools.

Features (reported): Exclusive Hard Mode loot drops, bonus Col and XP, additional boss attack patterns, shorter revival window.

Death Game Mode

Replicates the stakes of the original Sword Art Online premise: one death and your character is gone forever.

Survival Strategy

  1. Scout every area before engaging. Never rush.
  2. Always carry Teleport Crystals, Smoke Bombs, and Healing Potions.
  3. Be above the recommended minimum before any boss.
  4. Max out EX-Mods on your weapon before hard fights.
  5. Keep your AI partner alive — community reports say a fallen partner stays down for the run in Death Game Mode.
Important: there is no way to transfer a Death Game Mode character to another mode. If you die, everything is lost.

Floor Progression System

Aincrad's tower has 10 cleared floors in the current build (community-reported; more floors are added via updates, and an expansion DLC is announced for end of 2026). Each floor has a unique biome, enemies, and boss.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change game modes? No. Permanent per character. Is Death Game Mode worth it? It offers exclusive rewards and the most authentic death-game experience — but requires patience and the ability to handle losing hours of progress. How long does it take to clear all available floors? Community reports vary widely with mode and playstyle. Expect a long journey in any mode, and considerably longer in Death Game Mode where one death ends the run. What happens when new floors are added? Your character continues from their current floor. New floors are added after the highest cleared floor. All progress is retained. Is there co-op in any mode? No. Echoes of Aincrad is single-player only across all modes — your AI partner is your only companion.
