Partner System Overview

You never fight alone in Echoes of Aincrad. AI partners join every quest with their own:

  • Fighting style (aggressive, defensive, balanced)
  • Weapon preference
  • Support Skills (healing, buffs, debuffs)
  • Combination Skills (duo attacks)

A partner played passively is a damage loss, not a damage gain. Optimization means matching the partner to your weapon, managing their Support Skills, building the Combination gauge deliberately, and leveling them on the right schedule.

Note on numbers: Echoes of Aincrad does not publish official partner statistics. Percentages and timers below (heal amounts, buff durations, cooldowns) are community-reported and may vary with version and Cardinal Rank.

How Partners Work

Combat Behavior

Partners fight autonomously but respond to your commands:

  • Free Mode: Partner attacks your target or the nearest enemy
  • Switch Mode: Partner draws aggro while you reposition, heal, or set up combos

Support Skills

Assigned to your action wheel. Partners use them on cooldown or when conditions are met (e.g., you drop below a health threshold).

Combination Skills

Powerful duo attacks triggered after both you and your partner build enough damage on the same target. A gauge fills during combat — when full, unleash the Combination Skill for massive damage.

Partner Types

Asuna (Balanced Fighter)

  • Weapon: Rapier
  • Style: Aggressive, high DPS
  • Support Skill: Healing (restores roughly 30% HP)
  • Best for: General use, speedrunning content

Klein (Tank)

  • Weapon: Sword & Shield
  • Style: Defensive, draws aggro
  • Support Skill: Defense Up (reported ~20% damage reduction for ~30s)
  • Best for: Difficult bosses, survival-focused runs

Agil (Heavy Hitter)

  • Weapon: Two-Handed Axe
  • Style: Aggressive, AoE focus
  • Support Skill: Attack Up (reported ~15% damage increase for ~30s)
  • Best for: Farming, clearing mobs quickly

Lisbeth (Support Specialist)

  • Best for: Long boss fights, dungeon runs

Partner Selection by Weapon

Your WeaponBest PartnerWhy
--------------------------------
Rapier / Daggers (burst DPS)AsunaHealing covers your aggression; her rapier combos chain with your staggers
Greatsword / Two-Handed Axe (slow heavy)KleinHis aggro windows let you land slow finishers safely
Sword & Shield (tanky)AsunaYou hold the line; she provides the missing damage
Mage (ranged)KleinHe holds the line while you channel spells safely
Any solo contentKleinSurvivability beats DPS when you have no backup
Boss contentKleinBosses target the highest threat — make it the partner
Rule: if your weapon is slow, pick Klein. If it is fast, pick Asuna. Speed mismatch wastes the partner's windows.

Support Skill Priority

Partners learn Support Skills as they level. Not all are equal:

PrioritySkillWhy
----------------------
1HealingRestores ~30% HP when you drop low — the best skill in the game
2Buff (attack up)Flat damage increase on every rotation
3Debuff (defense down)Feeds into the Combination gauge faster
4CleanseSituational — only for status-heavy floors
5ShieldBetter than nothing, worse than heal
Minimum viable setup: always keep at least one healing-capable partner equipped. If you switch partners for a fight, make sure the replacement has Healing.

Best Partner by Situation

Combination Skill Optimization

The Combination gauge fills when both you and your partner damage the same target. It persists between fights — build it on trash, spend it on the boss.

Build PhaseActionReported Gauge Yield
-------------------------------------------
Trash packsYou and partner focus the same mobFast — 15–25% per pack
Split focusDifferent targetsSlow — 5–10% per pack
Boss fightFull gauge unloadedLarge damage window
Optimization rules:
  • Never split targets in normal floors — full focus roughly doubles gauge build speed
  • Save the full gauge for boss Phase 2 (most bosses enrage or summon adds then)
  • The Combination Skill scales with your weapon's damage — upgrade your weapon before relying on it
  • Dual-Wield signature skills + full gauge = one of the biggest burst windows in the game

The gauge also fills faster when you land consecutive hits without taking damage and when you trigger counter windows (parries). Once full, the gauge stays full until used — do not waste Combination Skills on normal enemies.

Switch Mode Tactics

Switch Mode is activated from the command wheel. Your partner becomes the focus of enemy attention for roughly 15 seconds, with a cooldown of roughly 30 seconds.

When to Switch

  • You need to heal — Switch, pop healing items, switch back
  • You are low on SP — Switch, let SP recover, switch back
  • Setting up a combo — Switch, position behind the enemy, unleash your full combo
  • Partner is low HP — Do NOT switch. Switch Mode on a dying partner gets them killed.

Optimization Rules

  • Do it BEFORE your SP is empty — the classic panic-switch wastes the window
  • Use it to set up finishers: Switch → enemy faces partner → land your slowest, hardest skill in safety
  • Use it to heal: switch, then drink potions / regen SP while the partner tanks
  • Do not waste it on trash mobs — save it for elites and bosses

Partner Progression

How Partners Improve

Partners scale with your Cardinal Rank. At higher ranks:

  • They learn new Support Skills
  • Their stats increase
  • Combination Skill damage increases
  • New dialogue and story interactions unlock

Partner-Specific Quests

Each partner has optional side quests that improve their abilities. Complete these the moment they appear — the upgrades are permanent and significant.

Progression Checkpoints (community-reported)

Cardinal RankPartner Milestone
----------------------------------
1–10Unlock first Support Skill (pick Healing first)
11–20Second Support Skill + new combos
21–30Combination Skill rank up (gauge fills faster)
31+Final Support Skill + signature combo
Leveling tips:
  • A partner that falls in combat leaves you fighting alone until the next checkpoint — keep them healed, not just you
  • Partners gain experience for fighting, so a partner you never swap outpaces the curve — pick one per build and commit
  • Keep your partner's level at or above your Cardinal Rank

Quick Optimization Checklist

  • [ ] One partner per build, committed (not rotated every floor)
  • [ ] Healing equipped on every partner you bring into boss content
  • [ ] Gauge built on trash, spent on boss Phase 2
  • [ ] Switch Mode used proactively, before SP is empty
  • [ ] Partner side quests done on sight
  • [ ] Partner level ≥ your Cardinal Rank at all times

Quick Tips

  • Healing Support Skill is the best — always have at least one heal-equipped partner
  • Partners cannot die permanently — but if they fall in combat, you fight alone until the next checkpoint
  • Switch Mode is not a panic button — use it proactively, not reactively
  • Combination Skill gauge persists between fights — build it on trash, spend it on the boss
  • Experiment with all partners — their playstyles complement different weapon choices
