Welcome to the Death Game

Echoes of Aincrad is a pixel-art action RPG roguelite inspired by Sword Art Online. Its premise draws directly on the SAO story: a "death game" where a character's death in the game world can be permanent. Your goal: survive, grow stronger, and clear the floors of Aincrad.

First Hour Priorities

1. Pick Your First Weapon

At the Town of Beginnings, choose your starting weapon. For beginners, pick Sword & Shield. It offers:

  • Block for damage reduction
  • Simple attack combos
  • Forgiving learning curve

You can switch weapons later between quests — starting choice is not permanent. See the full Beginner Weapon Rankings below before committing.

2. Understand the Combat Basics

Combat is real-time action with stamina (SP) management:

  • Light attacks: Fast, low SP cost, build combo
  • Heavy attacks: Slow, high damage, break shields
  • Block (shield weapons only): Reduce damage
  • Dodge: Universal evasion, costs SP
  • Parry: Timed block creates counter windows (blue flash = parry window)
Golden rule: Never empty your SP bar. Always save enough for one dodge or block.

3. Learn Cardinal Rank

Cardinal Rank is a global difficulty/progression indicator. It increases when you:

  • Complete main quests
  • Discover new towns and areas
What it affects:
  • ✅ Better items at merchants and Smithy
  • ✅ Stronger partner abilities
  • ✅ Better monster drops
  • ❌ Enemies also scale up with your rank
Critical tip: After every Cardinal Rank increase, immediately spend Growth Points at the Inn and upgrade your gear at the Smithy. If you rank up without upgrading, you will struggle.

4. Spend Growth Points Wisely

Growth Points are earned by defeating monsters. Spend them at the Inn on:

StatEffectPriority

DexterityCrit rate, light weapon damageHigh for Rapier/Dagger
AgilityAttack speed, dodge recoveryMedium
IntelligenceSkill damage scalingMedium
VitalityMax HPAlways useful
EnduranceMax SP, stamina recoveryHigh for all builds
MindSupport skill effectivenessLow (early game)
Beginner recommendation: 2 Vitality → 2 Endurance → 1 damage stat (Strength or Dexterity based on weapon).

5. Use Your AI Partner

You never fight alone. Your partner provides:

  • Combat assistance — they fight alongside you
  • Combination Skills — powerful duo attacks
  • Support Skills — heals, buffs, debuffs
  • Switch Mode — partner draws aggro while you reposition

Assign Support Skills to your action wheel and use them frequently. See the AI Partner Guide for the full breakdown.

Beginner Weapon Rankings

Your weapon determines your playstyle and how easily you survive the early floors. While you can switch weapons later, your first weapon will carry you through your first 5–10 hours as you learn the game.

Weapon-by-Weapon Analysis

1. Sword & Shield — The Safest Start

Sword & Shield is the recommended starting weapon for every new player. It offers the best balance of offense and defense with a forgiving learning curve.

Why it is great for beginners:
  • Block mechanic reduces incoming damage substantially — a huge margin for error
  • Simple combos that are easy to execute, even under pressure
  • Shield Bash (Sword Skill) stuns most early enemies, creating safe openings
  • Low stamina consumption means you rarely run out of SP at a bad time
Best early Sword Skills:
  1. Horizontal Arc — AoE slash, great for clearing groups of low-level enemies
  2. Shield Bash — Stun + damage, sets up free follow-up attacks
  3. Guard Assault — Block into immediate counter-attack
Stat priority for Sword & Shield beginners: Vitality > Endurance > Strength

2. Greatsword — High Damage, High Risk

Greatsword trades defense for raw damage. It is slower than Sword & Shield but hits much harder per swing.

Why it works for some beginners:
  • Charged attacks stagger most enemies, giving you control
  • High damage per hit means fewer total attacks needed to kill
  • Longer reach than Sword & Shield, letting you hit from relative safety
The catch: Greatsword has no block and high stamina costs. If you miss a charged attack, you are vulnerable for a long recovery animation. Only pick this if you have experience with action RPGs and prefer a heavy-hitting playstyle.

3. Two-Handed Axe — AoE Specialist

The Two-Handed Axe specializes in area-of-effect damage, making it excellent for clearing packs of weak enemies.

Strengths:
  • Best weapon for farming low-level enemy groups
  • Spin attacks hit everything around you
  • High stagger potential
Weaknesses:
  • No block and the highest stamina consumption of any weapon
  • Slow attack speed means you must commit to every swing
  • Weaker single-target DPS than Rapier or Dagger

4. Mace — The Tactical Choice

Mace is a shield weapon like Sword & Shield, but with a focus on stagger and guard break rather than raw damage.

Why pick Mace:
  • Strong stagger potential — you can keep enemies locked in hitstun
  • Steel Slam (shield-style skill) has a long stun duration
  • Effective against heavily armored enemies
Not recommended for pure beginners because the damage output is low and fights take longer. Better as a second weapon once you understand enemy patterns.

5. Rapier — High Skill Ceiling

Rapier offers high solo DPS potential through its parry-counter system.

When to pick Rapier:
  • You are experienced with action RPGs and want maximum damage
  • You are comfortable with parry timing — the blue flash counter window is roughly 0.3 seconds
  • You plan to play solo and need to kill enemies quickly
Avoid Rapier as a first weapon if: you tend to panic-roll or struggle with timing mechanics.

6. Dagger — Speed Run Specialist

Dagger is the fastest weapon with the highest crit rate. It also has a ranged throwing attack, making it the most versatile weapon — but also the least forgiving.

Do not pick Dagger as your first weapon. It has the shortest range, no block, and the lowest survivability of any weapon setup. Dagger is a "second playthrough" weapon for experienced players who already know enemy attack patterns.
