Greatsword build guide for Echoes of Aincrad. Best Sword Skills, charge attack combos, and EX-Mods for the Heavy Strength build. Master AoE farming strategies.
Why Play Greatsword in Echoes of Aincrad?
A Greatsword build in Echoes of Aincrad is the hardest-hitting Heavy Strength weapon setup. This guide covers the best Sword Skills, charge attack combos, stat allocation, and EX-Mods for dominating with massive damage and AoE farming strategies.
Greatsword Core Mechanics & Charge Attack System
Charge Attack
Hold the attack button to charge. Release at max charge for:
- +100% damage
- Guard break (cannot be blocked)
- Wide AoE (hits multiple enemies)
Charge attacks are slow. You are vulnerable while charging. Timing is everything.
Cyclone
Spin-to-win AoE Sword Skill. Covers 360° around you. Your best farming tool.
Avalanche
Heavy overhead slam. Highest single-hit damage in the game. Use against staggered or slow enemies.
Dodge Roll
Unlike shield weapons, Greatsword users dodge-roll instead of blocking. This is less safe but more mobile — use it to reposition for charge attacks.
Best Greatsword Sword Skills for Strength Builds
| Skill | Type | When to Use |
|---|---|---|
| ------- | ------ | ------------ |
| Cyclone | AoE spin | Farming mobs, clearing packs |
| Avalanche | Single-target slam | Boss damage phase, stunned enemies |
| Helm Breaker | Gap closer | Close distance on ranged enemies |
| Earth Splitter | Line AoE | Enemies in a row, corridor fights |

Greatsword Combat Flow for PvE Content
Vs. Mobs (Farming)
Charge attack → walk into pack → release → Cyclone to clean up survivors. HP Recovery on Kill keeps you topped off.
Vs. Bosses
- Dodge their attacks, stay at mid-range
- Charge attack during their recovery animations
- Helm Breaker to close gaps after dodging
- Avalanche when the boss is staggered
- Repeat
Vs. Fast Enemies (Goblins, Wolves)
Do NOT charge. Use light attacks instead. Charge only when they are staggered or recovering from an attack.
Greatsword Farming Strategy for XP and Materials
Greatsword is one of the best farming weapons thanks to AoE — see the Leveling Guide for optimal XP routes:
- Find a mob-dense area (Floor 1 Forest goblin camp is ideal)
- Run in circles to group enemies together
- Charge attack into the pack
- Cyclone to finish
- Collect drops, move to next pack
PvE Boss Matchups
| Boss | Greatsword Strategy |
|---|---|
| ------ | ------------------- |
| Violet Fencer | Charge during her Thrust Combo recovery. Helm Breaker after her AoE Slash. |
| Ark Guardian | Charge during beam wind-up (long animation = free charge). Dodge the slam. |
| Twin Wardens | Focus Blades. Charge attacks interrupt his Flurry. Dodge Flames' projectiles. |
Quick Tips
- Patience > aggression — one charged hit is worth five light attacks
- Learn enemy recovery windows — that is when you charge
- Dodge roll has i-frames — use them to roll through attacks, not away from them
- Do not charge against fast enemies — you will get hit every time
- Weapon weight matters — Greatsword is heavy. You cannot cancel animations. Commit to each swing.
Common Greatsword Build Mistakes to Avoid
Over-Committing to Charges
The #1 killer of Greatsword players is charging at the wrong time. A full charge leaves you locked in animation for nearly two seconds. If you start a charge while the enemy is already winding up an attack, you will eat the hit and likely get staggered out of your charge.
Fix: Only begin charging when the enemy has already committed to a recovery animation or is clearly out of range.Ignoring Vitality
New Greatsword players often go 100% Strength for the biggest numbers. This works on paper and fails in practice. You will trade hits — the weapon demands it. Without Vitality, one or two stray hits send you to the respawn point.
Fix: Stick to the 50/25/25 split (Str/Vit/End). Growth Points are widely reported as permanent — treat every point as final — and dying at the boss door is far more expensive.Spinning in Tight Spaces
Cyclone is amazing in the open, but its long animation locks you in place. Using it in narrow corridors or near ledges gets you hit by attacks you could have dodged, or worse — knocks you off an edge.
Fix: Use Earth Splitter in hallways. Save Cyclone for open areas with 3+ enemies surrounding you.Forgetting to Re-apply EX-Mods After Gear Swap
EX-Mods are slotted to gear, not your character. When you upgrade to a new Greatsword, your old EX-Mods stay on the old weapon. Players frequently arrive at a boss fight wondering why their HP recovery and charge damage bonuses aren't working.
Fix: Every time you equip a new weapon, open the EX-Mod menu and slot your mods before heading out.Greatsword Gear Progression Guide by Stage

FAQ
Does Greatsword work for PvP?
There is no PvP in Echoes of Aincrad — the game is single-player only (see the PvP Status page). In normal combat, though, the Greatsword is high-risk, high-reward: fast enemies move unpredictably, making charged attacks harder to land. Use Helm Breaker to close distance and Earth Splitter to zone groups. Light attack pressure is more important than heavy charges against fast enemies.
Should I use a shield with Greatsword?
Greatsword is a two-handed weapon class. You cannot equip a shield while wielding a Greatsword — the weapon takes both hands. Some new players mistake the "Heavy Weapon" tag for "Sword and Shield." If you want a blocking playstyle, check the Shield Build guide instead.
Why does my charge attack sometimes not stagger enemies?
Stagger buildup per hit depends on the enemy's stagger threshold. Tougher enemies (elites and bosses) have stagger resistance that reduces buildup. If your charge attack is not staggering, you need one or more of: a higher-rank stagger EX-Mod, the Vengeance EX-Mod, or a weapon with an innate stagger bonus (Titan's Edge and above have this). Against bosses, expect to land 3-4 charged hits before they stagger regardless of your gear.
Is Greatsword good for solo leveling?
Greatsword is one of the best solo leveling weapons in the game. The AoE on charge attacks and Cyclone lets you clear mob packs faster than any single-target weapon. With HP Recovery on Kill, you effectively have infinite sustain. The only downside is boss fights take a bit longer since some bosses have few punish windows. Stick to the Tanky Greatsword variant while leveling and you will rarely die.
What are the best EX-Mods for a Greatsword build in Echoes of Aincrad?
The best EX-Mods for a Greatsword build are, in order: Quick Charge (faster skill charge), Power Surge (+skill damage), Life Steal (heal on hit), and Vengeance (+damage after blocking). The god roll set combines all four for maximum damage and sustain. Vengeance is valuable for progressing past mid-game floors, as shielded enemies will bounce your attacks without good timing. Life Steal enables extended farming sessions without healing items. Check the EX-Mod Guide for detailed crafting information.
